Step by step

  1. Find out what your suspension requires

Each type of suspension has its own length and reinstatement requirements. WYDOT's guide to driving privilege withdrawals lists them, and Driver Services can answer questions at (307) 777-4800. [1]

  2. Serve the suspension, or ask about limited driving

You can't reinstate until the suspension period has ended and no other suspendable offenses are pending. For some suspensions, you can ask for a probationary license by sending a written record-review request with a $15 fee. WYDOT allows only one probationary license in five years, and none during a revocation. [1][2][3]

  3. Have your insurer file an SR-22, if required

DWUI, reckless driving, revocations, a no-insurance conviction, and an uninsured crash not settled before the suspension starts all call for an SR-22. Buy it from an insurer authorized in Wyoming, which usually sends it to Driver Services electronically within 24 to 72 hours. You keep it for 3 years from the date it is required. If it isn't on file when your suspension ends, you stay suspended until it is. [1][4][5]

  4. Pay the reinstatement fee

The fee is $50 for most suspensions and revocations, or $5 for a child-support suspension. Pay online through oneWYO, at a driver exam office, or by mail to WYDOT-Driver Services, 5300 Bishop Blvd., Cheyenne, WY 82009-3340. Include your name, license number, and date of birth, and never mail cash. [2]

  5. Complete any other requirements on your record

Some suspensions need more than the fee and SR-22, such as a court notice that a ticket is resolved or a release after an uninsured crash. After a revocation, you must go through a driver investigation to be licensed again. If a new license is issued, its fee is separate from the reinstatement fee. [1]

  6. Confirm you are reinstated before you drive

Make sure all three requirements are met, the suspension period, the SR-22 if needed, and the fee. Call Driver Services at (307) 777-4800 if you are not sure. [1][2]

After a DWUI arrest or conviction

  1. Request a hearing within 20 days, if you want one

A test result of 0.08 or more brings a 90-day Administrative Per Se suspension. You have 20 days from the date of the notice to request a hearing. If you don't, the suspension starts 30 days after the notice date. [1][6]

  2. Know how long your suspension lasts

Within 10 years, a first DWUI means a 90-day suspension, a second means one year, and a third or later means a three-year revocation. A probationary license is only possible after a first offense with a BAC under 0.15, and only if you have not had one in the past five years. [1]

  3. Get an ignition interlock license, if you need one

To drive during an eligible suspension, you need an approved interlock in any vehicle you drive and an interlock restricted license. You must have an SR-22, pay the $50 reinstatement fee, and show a valid installation certificate. The interlock period is six months for a first DWUI with a BAC of 0.15 or more, one year for a second, two years for a third, and lifetime for a fourth or later. [1]

  4. File an SR-22 even for a first DWUI

Every DWUI conviction, including the first, requires an SR-22 to reinstate. You keep it for 3 years from the date of the suspension, or the revocation for a third offense. [1][7]
