FR-44: the DUI version of the SR-22
Florida and Virginia use a separate filing after a DUI, the FR-44. It works like an SR-22, since your insurer files it with the state to prove coverage, but it requires much higher liability limits.
FR-44 vs. SR-22 at a glance
Both forms prove you carry liability insurance, and in both states you keep the filing for 3 years. The difference is how much coverage it has to prove.

Florida's FR-44
You need an FR-44 if you were convicted of DUI after October 1, 2007 and didn't have 100/300/50 coverage at the time of the offense. It requires $100,000 bodily injury per person, $300,000 per crash, and $50,000 property damage, or a $350,000 combined single limit. FLHSMV says to keep it for 3 years from the date your license is reinstated.
The policy behind it must be written for at least 6 months, and the insurer can cancel it only in limited cases. After a DUI suspension, you must also keep liability coverage on every vehicle registered in your name for 3 years. If you didn't have the higher limits at the time of the offense, you owe an extra financial responsibility reinstatement fee of $150, $250, or $500. [1][2][3][8][9][10]
Virginia's FR-44
Virginia requires an FR-44 after DUI-related convictions, including maiming while DUI and driving while your license is forfeited for DUI. State law sets its limits at double the SR-22 minimums, which makes them 100/200/50 for policies effective on or after January 1, 2025. DMV says the double-limits rule applies to people convicted on or after January 1, 2008.
You keep it for 3 years. DMV counts from the end of your suspension or revocation, and the statute says 3 years after you otherwise become entitled to a license. DMV's printed reinstatement guide still lists older, lower limits, so go by the current law and confirm with your insurer. [4][5][6][7]
Georgia: higher limits after a DUI
Georgia doesn't use the FR-44 name; it uses the regular SR-22. But its Department of Driver Services DUI reinstatement rule requires higher limits after a DUI: 50/100/50 after a first DUI conviction and 100/300/100 after a second or later one. Confirm the limits that apply to your conviction with DDS. [11][12]
If your FR-44 is cancelled
Your insurer reports it to the state. In Florida that's on an FR-46, and Florida law then requires you to return your license and registrations until you file new proof. In Virginia, DMV suspends or revokes your driving privilege until you provide a current SR-22 or FR-44. [1][4][13]
