How to get your license reinstated in Idaho
Checked against official Idaho sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026
Getting a suspended Idaho license back means serving the suspension, paying every reinstatement fee, and, for many suspensions, having an SR-22 on file. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), Driver Services, handles reinstatement. Your license stays suspended until those requirements are met, even after the suspension period is over. [1][2]
- SR-22 required?
- Yes
- Base reinstatement fee
- $85
- Keep SR-22 for
- 3 years
Step by step
-
Check your driver status
Use ITD's free online driver status check to see where your license stands. You'll need your name, date of birth, and your license number or Social Security number. [1][3]
-
Serve the suspension
Serve the full suspension period. A restricted permit may let you drive during part of it. ITD issues restricted driving permits for administrative suspensions, and courts issue restricted permits for court-ordered suspensions. [2]
-
Have your insurer file an SR-22, if required
DUI, driving without insurance, reckless driving, eluding, leaving the scene, driving without privileges, and unsatisfied crash judgments all call for an SR-22. Since January 1, 2025, your insurer submits it through the State of Idaho Insurance Verification System. For most conviction-based suspensions you keep it for 3 years starting on the last day of the suspension; a first no-insurance conviction needs it for 1 year from the conviction. [1][2][4]
-
Keep the SR-22 in force
If your policy is cancelled, your insurer tells ITD with an SR-26. Your suspension then comes back until a new SR-22 is filed and a $25 reinstatement fee is paid. [2]
-
Pay every reinstatement fee
Fees are $85 for many suspensions, such as no insurance or reckless driving, $245 for an administrative (ALS) suspension, and $285 for an Idaho DUI. With several suspensions you usually pay the highest single fee, but each separate Title 18 offense, such as a DUI, has its own fee. Pay online at Idaho DMV Online, by check or money order by mail, or by card at (208) 584-4343; card payments add a service fee. [1][2][5]
-
Confirm your status before you drive
Check your status again. If your suspension time is over but you are still suspended, ITD says it's because fees are unpaid or no SR-22 is on file. [1][3]
After a DUI arrest or conviction
-
Request an ALS hearing within 7 days, if you want one
If you failed a breath, blood, or urine test, ITD says you must request a hearing within 7 days of the date of service on your suspension notice. Send a written request with your name, license number, and daytime phone number to ALSPublic@itd.idaho.gov or by mail. If you refused testing, ITD says you have 7 days to request a hearing with the court. [1]
-
Know the ALS suspension and permit rules
A first ALS suspension lasts 90 days, and you can't drive at all for the first 30. You may then qualify for a restricted driving permit from ITD (form ITD 3227, $60), but only after paying the $245 ALS reinstatement fee. A second ALS within 5 years is a 1-year suspension with no permit. [1]
-
Install an ignition interlock
ITD says every ALS suspension requires an ignition interlock for 1 year, starting 10 days after the 90-day suspension ends, unless the court waives it. Use one of the ITD-certified interlock providers. [1]
-
Expect two fees and an SR-22
An Idaho DUI conviction, including a withheld judgment, has a $285 reinstatement fee. If the same arrest also led to an ALS suspension, that $245 fee is due too, because one case is civil and the other is criminal. You also need an SR-22 for 3 years, starting when your DUI suspension ends. The court may grant a restricted permit during a DUI suspension; to ask for one, apply to the court clerk with your case number. [1][2]
