  1. Find out what you owe

If your license was suspended, denied, or revoked for more than one reason, you may owe a reinstatement fee for each department action. DLD's License Status page explains what each status on your record means. For questions about your record or fees, call DLD at 801-965-4437 or toll-free at 888-353-4224. [1][2][3]

  2. Serve the suspension, or ask about a limited license

You may qualify for a hardship limited license during a suspension, revocation, or denial. For a non-alcohol case you need a letter from the judge who convicted you, proof of your work hours from your employer, and proof of undue hardship. Call a DLD hearing officer to see if you qualify. [4]

  3. Get an SR-22 on file, if required

DLD mails you a notice if you need an SR-22, most often after a no-insurance conviction or an uninsured crash. Your insurer or agent sends it to DLD, or you can email, fax, or bring it in yourself. DLD only takes the form titled "Financial Responsibility Form," signed within the last 30 days. [1]

  4. Keep the SR-22 for the full period

The SR-22 usually lasts 3 years. DLD says it typically runs from the date of conviction, and the law says from the date proof was last requested. If your insurer ends the policy, it must tell the state within 10 days. [1][5][6]

  5. Pay every reinstatement fee

The fee is $40 for a points suspension, a no-insurance conviction, or a failure to appear in court (plus court fees). An alcohol or drug offense costs $85 plus a $262 administrative fee. You can call DLD customer service to pay by phone. [2][7]

  2. Expect higher fees

Reinstating after an alcohol or drug offense costs $85 plus a $262 administrative fee. [2]

  3. Plan for an ignition interlock

After a DUI alcohol conviction, you need an ignition interlock for 18 months if you are 21 or older, or 3 years if you are under 21. Anyone convicted, suspended, or revoked for a DUI is an alcohol-restricted driver. [8]

  4. Ask about early reinstatement

Some drivers can get their license back early by installing an ignition interlock in every vehicle they own or drive. For example, after a refusal revocation you must first serve at least 90 days. Call a DLD hearing officer to petition, and pay all reinstatement fees, which are non-refundable. [10]
