SR-22 in Wyoming
Checked against official Wyoming sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026
Wyoming requires an SR-22 after any DWUI conviction, including a first offense, and after reckless driving, a no-insurance conviction, and certain other offenses. Your insurer files it with WYDOT Driver Services.
You keep it for 3 years. For mandatory suspensions and revocations, including DWUI, state law counts the 3 years from the date of suspension or revocation. [1][2][3]

Does Wyoming require an SR-22?
Yes. Wyoming requires an SR-22 insurance certificate, filed by your insurer with WYDOT Driver Services, after certain suspensions and revocations. [1]
Form: SR-22 (certificate of insurance as proof of financial responsibility) [1]
How long do you need an SR-22 in Wyoming?
3 years from the date proof is required. For mandatory suspensions and revocations, the statute counts the 3 years from the date of suspension or revocation. [2]
After a DUI
3 years beginning on the date of the DWUI suspension (or revocation, for a third offense). An SR-22 is required to reinstate after every DWUI offense, including the first. [3]
What does reinstatement cost?
$50 reinstatement fee for all suspensions and revocations ($5 for child-support suspensions) [4]
We couldn't confirm whether Wyoming charges its own fee to file an SR-22. Your insurer may charge one.
What coverage do you need?
$25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, $20,000 property damage per accident [2]
What happens if your SR-22 lapses?
The insurer must notify WYDOT when SR-22 insurance is canceled, at least 10 days before it ends. WYDOT then suspends your license and registration until you file new proof. [2]
Don't own a car?
Yes. Wyoming law provides for an operator's policy that covers you while driving vehicles you don't own, and the certificate need not list vehicles if you don't own one. [2]
Who has to file one?
DWUI convictions (first offense included); reckless driving; revocations for leaving the scene of an injury crash, vehicular homicide, or a felony tied to the manner of driving; a conviction for driving without liability insurance; an uninsured crash not resolved before the suspension starts; and applying for an ignition interlock restricted license. (If an SR-22 is already required, it must be on file before a probationary license is issued.) [1]
Who handles it
Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), Driver Services, Cheyenne [1]
Common questions
Do I need an SR-22 after my first DWUI?
Yes. A first DWUI brings a 90-day suspension, a second brings 1 year, and a third or later brings a 3-year revocation. Each time, you need an SR-22 and the reinstatement fee to get your license back. You also need an SR-22 to apply for an ignition interlock restricted license. [1][3]
How much does it cost to reinstate?
WYDOT charges a $50 reinstatement fee for all suspensions and revocations, or $5 for child-support suspensions. This is on top of any fee for a new license. [1][4]
I was convicted of driving without insurance. What do I do?
You must file an SR-22 and keep it for 3 years. If you file it before your suspension start date, the suspension is removed from your record. After that date, you need the SR-22 plus the reinstatement fee. [1][5]
What happens if my SR-22 insurance is canceled?
Your insurer must tell WYDOT at least 10 days before the coverage ends. WYDOT then suspends your license and registration until you file new proof. [2]
I don't own a car. Can I still get an SR-22?
Yes. An operator's policy covers you when you drive vehicles you don't own, and the certificate doesn't need to list a vehicle. State law also accepts a surety bond or a deposit of money or securities as proof. [2]
What if I move out of Wyoming?
WYDOT will release you from the SR-22 requirement if you fill out a Non-resident proof of financial responsibility form. You may still owe a reinstatement fee. [6]
