SR-22 in Missouri
Checked against official Missouri sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026
Missouri requires an SR-22 to reinstate after many suspensions and revocations, including point suspensions, alcohol-related offenses, refusing a chemical test, unpaid accident judgments, and some suspensions for driving without insurance. Your insurer files it with the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR).
For most reasons you keep it for 2 years from the date your suspension or revocation started. After a no-insurance suspension, you keep proof of insurance for 3 years from the date you become eligible to reinstate. [1][5]

Does Missouri require an SR-22?
Yes. Missouri requires many drivers to file and maintain proof of liability insurance on an SR-22 form, filed by their insurer with the Department of Revenue, before reinstating. [1]
Form: SR-22 (AAMVA Uniform Financial Responsibility Form / Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate); DOR also mentions an SR-22A [2]
How long do you need an SR-22 in Missouri?
2 years from the starting date of your suspension or revocation for most reasons (points, alcohol, accident judgments); 3 years from your eligible reinstatement date for mandatory-insurance (no-insurance) suspensions [1]
After a DUI
2 years from the starting date of the suspension or revocation (alcohol-related moving violations, administrative alcohol suspensions, and test refusals) [1]
What does reinstatement cost?
$20 base reinstatement fee; alcohol-related and test-refusal actions are $45, and repeat no-insurance suspensions are $200 or $400 [3]
We couldn't confirm whether Missouri charges its own fee to file an SR-22. Your insurer may charge one.
What coverage do you need?
$25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per accident, $25,000 property damage per accident (plus required uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000/$50,000) [4]
What happens if your SR-22 lapses?
Your insurer can't cancel a certified policy until at least 10 days after it files a cancellation notice with the Department of Revenue. If you don't keep proof on file for the required period, your license is suspended again until new proof is filed. [3]
Don't own a car?
Yes. Missouri law recognizes an operator's policy covering vehicles you don't own, and the SR-22 form has an "Operator's Policy: applicable to any non-owned vehicle" box. [4]
Who has to file one?
Point suspensions and revocations, alcohol-related moving violations, administrative alcohol (BAC) suspensions, refusing a chemical test, Abuse & Lose / minor in possession revocations, unpaid motor vehicle accident judgments, and suspensions for driving without insurance [1]
Who handles it
Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR), Driver License Bureau, Jefferson City [5]
Common questions
Do the 2 years start when I get my license back?
No. For points, alcohol, and accident judgment cases, DOR counts the 2 years from the start of your suspension or revocation. So by the time you reinstate, you may have less than 2 years left. If you owe proof for more than one reason, you only file one SR-22. [1]
What do I need after a DWI or alcohol suspension?
For alcohol-related suspensions and revocations, DOR requires an SR-22 for 2 years from the start of the suspension or revocation, plus completing SATOP. Some drivers also need an ignition interlock, which must stay installed for at least 6 months after reinstatement. A first-time suspension of a driver under 21 for a BAC of .02% or more does not require proof of insurance. DOR's chart doesn't say how long an SR-22 is needed after a ten-year license denial. [1]
How much does it cost to reinstate?
The base reinstatement fee is $20. Alcohol-related actions and test refusals cost $45. No-insurance suspensions cost $20 the first time, $200 the second time within two years, and $400 for a third or later. [1][3][6]
I was suspended for no insurance. Is my insurance card enough?
Only if the suspension didn't involve an accident. If there was an accident, DOR requires an SR-22. [1][7]
What happens if my SR-22 lapses?
Your insurer can't cancel a certified policy until at least 10 days after it notifies DOR. If you don't keep proof on file, your license is suspended again until new proof is filed. For no-insurance cases, state law says your license and registration stay suspended until you file proof or the 3-year period has passed. [3][8][9]
I don't own a car. Can I still get an SR-22?
Yes. Missouri law allows an operator's policy that covers you in vehicles you don't own. The SR-22 form has a box for this kind of policy. [2][4]
