SR-22 in Iowa

Checked against official Iowa sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026

Iowa requires proof of financial responsibility, usually an SR-22, after many suspensions and revocations, including OWI revocations. An insurer authorized in Iowa files it electronically with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT).

You need it for 2 years, starting on the first day of your last suspension or revocation that requires it. [1][2][5]

Does Iowa require an SR-22?

Yes. Iowa requires proof of financial responsibility, usually an SR-22 filed by an Iowa-authorized insurer with the Iowa DOT, after many suspensions and revocations, including OWI revocations. [1]

Form: SR-22 ("AAMVA Uniform Financial Responsibility Form"). Employer fleet coverage uses an SR-23; cancellations are reported on an SR-26. [2]

How long do you need an SR-22 in Iowa?

2 years, starting on the effective date of your last suspension or revocation that requires proof (Iowa Code 321A.17). The Iowa DOT says proof is required from the first day of the suspension or revocation. [2]

After a DUI

2 years from the first day of the OWI revocation (same as the standard period). Not required for zero-tolerance (under-21) revocations. [3]

What does reinstatement cost?

$20 reinstatement fee, plus the license fee (a $10 duplicate license fee in many cases). OWI revocations also require a $200 civil penalty. [3]

We couldn't confirm whether Iowa charges its own fee to file an SR-22. Your insurer may charge one.

What coverage do you need?

$20,000 bodily injury per person, $40,000 bodily injury per accident, $15,000 property damage per accident [4]

What happens if your SR-22 lapses?

When your proof is cancelled (the insurer files an SR-26), you must immediately refile proof or surrender your license and registrations. If you don't refile, the DOT serves a suspension notice; you can't drive or register vehicles in Iowa until proof is refiled. [2]

Don't own a car?

Yes. The SR-22 may certify an owner's or an operator's policy. An operator's policy doesn't let you register vehicles, but you may drive a vehicle you don't own if its owner has the required liability coverage. [2]

Who has to file one?

Most suspensions or revocations based on a conviction or bail forfeiture, and all OWI revocations under chapter 321J, require proof (Iowa Code 321A.17). Proof is also required under the crash-security and judgment sections (321A.13, 321A.14, 321A.16). Some suspensions are exempt, such as zero-tolerance revocations. [5]

Who handles it

Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT). Insurers must file SR-22s and cancellations electronically; paper filings from insurers are not accepted. [2]

Common questions

Does the 2 years start when I get my license back?

No. The 2 years start on the first day of your suspension or revocation, so part of that time can pass while you're still suspended. You still need proof on file to be reinstated, and a new qualifying suspension moves the start date. [1][2]

What do I need to reinstate after an OWI?

You need proof of financial responsibility, such as an SR-22, for 2 years from the first day of the OWI revocation. The DOT charges a $20 reinstatement fee plus the license fee, and a $200 civil penalty for OWI revocations. You also need a drinking driver course, a substance use evaluation and treatment, and ignition interlock proof where it applies. An SR-22 isn't required for a zero-tolerance (under-21) revocation. [3]

Are there alternatives to an SR-22?

Yes. You can file a surety bond, cash, or securities worth $55,000. If you drive your employer's vehicles, the employer's fleet insurer can file an SR-23, which covers only the employer's vehicles. [1][2]

Can I drive a car that isn't on my SR-22?

The DOT says you can only drive and register vehicles listed on your SR-22. If your SR-22 is for an operator's policy, Iowa's rule lets you drive a car you don't own as long as its owner has the required coverage, but you can't register vehicles with it. [1][2]

What if I move out of Iowa?

If you prove you've become a resident of another state after your suspension ends, the Iowa requirement doesn't apply, and the DOT accepts a residency statement instead of an SR-22. But you can't apply for an Iowa license within 2 years of your last suspension unless you file proof. [3][5]

What happens if my SR-22 is cancelled?

Your insurer files an SR-26, and you must immediately refile proof or surrender your license and registrations. If you don't, the DOT serves a suspension notice, and you can't drive or register vehicles in Iowa until proof is refiled. [2]
