How to get your license reinstated in Iowa

Checked against official Iowa sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026

Getting a suspended or revoked Iowa license back means meeting every requirement on your record, paying the reinstatement and license fees, and, in many cases, keeping an SR-22 on file. The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) handles reinstatement, and its online lookup shows what you still need to do. [1][2][3][4]

Step by step

  1. Check what you need to reinstate

Sign in to the Iowa DOT's View Reinstatement Requirements page with your name, date of birth, the last 5 digits of your Social Security number, and your license or ID number. It shows what you still need to do to get your license back. [3]

  2. Pay any court fines first

If your license was suspended for unpaid fines, pay them in full at the county clerk of court or online. Then send proof of payment to the Iowa DOT. Your county attorney's office can tell you about a payment plan (CAPP) or the License Reinstatement Program. [5]

  3. Ask about a temporary restricted license

If you're at least 18 and live in Iowa, you might qualify for a temporary restricted license (TRL) while your license is suspended or revoked. For non-OWI cases, it lets you drive for set purposes such as work, health care, and school. You need an SR-22 on file and any civil penalties paid first. [6]

  4. Have your insurer file an SR-22, if required

Most suspensions or revocations based on a conviction, and all OWI revocations, require proof of insurance. Usually that's an SR-22 your Iowa-authorized insurer files with the Iowa DOT. You keep it for 2 years, starting from the first day of your suspension or revocation. [1][2][7]

  5. Pass any required tests and pay the fees

Pay the $20 reinstatement fee plus the license fee at an Iowa DMV, which is often a $10 duplicate license fee. If you've gone without driving privileges for more than a year, you must also pass the knowledge and drive tests. [5][8]

  6. Confirm your status, then keep your proof active

Before you drive, sign in to the Iowa DOT to check your license status. If your SR-22 is canceled, you must refile proof right away or surrender your license and registrations, or they will be suspended until you refile. [1][9]

After an OWI arrest or conviction

  1. Appeal within 10 days, if you want to

The Iowa DOT says the deadline to appeal an OWI revocation is 10 days from when the officer served you. After you appeal, don't drive until the DOT sends a notice saying whether you can keep driving. [10]

  2. Finish the drinking driver course and evaluation

Complete an approved drinking driver course and an approved substance use disorder evaluation, plus any treatment. Your providers send proof of completion to the Iowa DOT. [8]

  3. Pay the civil penalty and file an SR-22

An OWI revocation adds a $200 civil penalty on top of the $20 reinstatement fee and the license fee. You also need an SR-22 for 2 years from the first day of the revocation, except after a zero-tolerance (under-21) revocation. [8]

  4. Plan for an ignition interlock

After a first OWI, you may be eligible for a TRL if you're over 18, your OWI didn't cause a death, and an ignition interlock is installed on every vehicle you drive. With two or more OWIs, you need an interlock on all vehicles you drive for 365 days after your license is reinstated; with a TRL, the Iowa DOT says it's at least 365 days from when you get the TRL or the length of the TRL, whichever is later.
