Does Oklahoma require an SR-22?

Checked against official Oklahoma sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026

Oklahoma doesn't use the SR-22. Since November 1, 2009, state law hasn't accepted an insurer's SR-22-type certificate as proof of insurance. Instead, you prove coverage with your standard insurance card (the law calls it a security verification form), a deposit of money or securities, or self-insurance.

Does Oklahoma require an SR-22?

No. Since November 1, 2009, Oklahoma law has not accepted an insurer's SR-22-type certificate as proof of financial responsibility. Proof is given with a security verification form (the standard insurance card), a money or securities deposit, or self-insurance. To reinstate after a no-insurance suspension, you show an owner's or operator's policy. [1]

What does reinstatement cost?

$25 single reinstatement fee, plus a processing fee: $25 per suspension in most cases, or $75 per suspension plus a $200 trauma-care assessment for DUI, implied-consent, and no-insurance suspensions. [2]

What coverage do you need?

$25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 bodily injury per crash, $25,000 property damage (policies issued or renewed on or after April 1, 2005) [3]

Who handles it

Service Oklahoma handles driver license suspensions and reinstatements. The Department of Public Safety holds financial-responsibility hearings after uninsured crashes. [2]

Common questions

Do I need an SR-22 after a DUI in Oklahoma?

No. Since 2009, Oklahoma law accepts only an insurance card, a deposit, or self-insurance as proof, so there is no SR-22 to file after a DUI or any other offense. You still have to pay the reinstatement and processing fees for your suspension. [1][2]

What do I need to reinstate after a no-insurance suspension?

The suspension lasts until you pay the fees and show proof of insurance. That proof must be an owner's policy or an operator's policy, which covers you when you drive cars you don't own. A binder doesn't count. If you didn't turn in your license within 30 days of the notice, there's an extra $50 fee. [4][5]

How much does reinstatement cost?

Under state law, one $25 reinstatement fee covers every suspension on your record. On top of that, you pay a processing fee for each suspension, which is $25 for most, or $75 plus a $200 trauma-care assessment for DUI, implied-consent, and no-insurance suspensions. You may be able to get a provisional license while paying at least $5 a month toward what you owe. [2]

What if I actually had insurance when I was ticketed?

If you prove you were insured at the time of the offense, the no-insurance suspension is cancelled and no fees are due. Showing a valid insurance card for the date of the offense also gets the criminal charge dismissed. [5][6]

My license was suspended after a crash without insurance. What can I do?

You can ask the Department of Public Safety for a Financial Responsibility administrative hearing. [2][7]
