How to get your license reinstated in Kansas

Checked against official Kansas sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026

The Kansas Department of Revenue's Division of Vehicles suspends licenses for reasons like no proof of insurance, DUI, or unpaid tickets. Its Driver Solutions bureau handles suspensions and reinstatement. Getting your license back means clearing each requirement on your record and paying any reinstatement fee. [1]

Step by step

  1. Check your status and what you need

Use the Driver's License Status Check to see a summary of your record. It won't show actions from other states. If you're suspended, call Driver Solutions at 785-296-3671 to learn whether you're eligible and what you must do to reinstate. [2]

  2. Settle unpaid tickets with the court

If you're suspended for failing to comply with a traffic ticket, the court that issued it decides when you've done enough. Kansas fully reinstates the suspension once the court tells the Division you are in substantial compliance. [1]

  3. Ask about restricted driving while you wait

You may be able to get modified (restricted) driving privileges during a suspension or revocation. You apply online after registering with the Department of Revenue Customer Service Center. [1][3][4]

  4. Have your insurer file proof of insurance, if required

After a conviction for DUI, driving while suspended, driving without insurance, leaving the scene of a crash, or certain other offenses, your insurer must keep proof of your insurance on file with the Division for 1 year. The same applies after a suspension for not keeping insurance. If that policy ends, your insurer must tell the Division, which can suspend you again. [5]

  5. Pay your reinstatement fee

Reinstatement after an insurance suspension costs $100, or $300 if your registration was revoked within a year of a prior revocation. Alcohol suspensions have their own, higher fees. You can pay reinstatement fees online, but not traffic tickets. [4][5][6]

  6. Confirm you're valid before you drive

Finishing the items on the Status Check doesn't by itself mean your license is valid again. Confirm with Driver Solutions by phone or by email at kdor_dc@ks.gov. Include your name, date of birth, address, and license number. [1][2]

After a DUI arrest or test refusal

  1. Request a hearing within 14 days, if you want one

Mail or fax a written hearing request within 14 days after the officer's certification is served on you, or 17 days if it was served by mail. Pay the $50 hearing fee within the same time. If you don't request a hearing and pay on time, your suspension takes effect as stated in the notice. [7][8]

  2. Know your suspension and interlock periods

A first test failure or DUI with a BAC of .08 to .1499 brings a 30-day suspension, then 6 months or 1 year of ignition interlock. A first administrative test refusal brings a 1-year suspension, then 2 years of interlock. Later occurrences and higher BACs mean longer periods. [9]

  3. Pay the alcohol reinstatement fee

A test failure or DUI costs $200 for a first occurrence, $400 for a second, $600 for a third, and $800 after that. An administrative test refusal costs $600, $900, $1,200, then $1,500. [9][10]

  4. Install an approved interlock device

Only approved ignition interlock devices can be used in Kansas. Bring your interlock restriction notice to the provider when you have the device installed. If you can't afford it, you can apply for the Ignition Interlock Affordability Program (form DC-1016). [1][4]

  5. Keep proof of insurance on file for 1 year

A DUI conviction means your insurer must keep proof of your insurance on file with the Division for 1 year. [5]
