How to get your license reinstated in West Virginia
Checked against official West Virginia sources · Last reviewed October 6, 2026
Getting a suspended or revoked West Virginia license back means serving the full suspension, meeting its requirements, and paying the reinstatement fee. The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) handles reinstatement, and it does not list an SR-22 among its reinstatement requirements. [1][2]

Step by step
-
Check your status and what you owe
Check your license status online on the DMV's Drivers page. Call the DMV at 1-800-642-9066 to find out the total amount you need to pay. DMV regional offices can't give you reinstatement requirements or take reinstatement fees. [1][3][4][5]
-
Serve the full suspension
You can apply for reinstatement once you finish your mandatory suspension period. After a no-insurance suspension, you must serve the whole suspension even if you pay the fee early. If you face a 30-day points suspension, sending proof of an approved defensive driving course and the reinstatement fee before it starts cancels it. [1][2]
-
Show proof of insurance if you were suspended for no insurance
The DMV doesn't list an SR-22 among its reinstatement requirements, and after a no-insurance suspension state law doesn't require your insurer to file a certificate. Instead, you must show current proof of insurance on all your registered vehicles. [1][6]
-
Pay the reinstatement fee
The license reinstatement fee is $50, on top of any other fees and charges. Reinstating a vehicle registration after an insurance suspension costs $100. You can pay license reinstatement fees by credit card through the DMV's online reinstatement service. [1][4][7]
-
Mail any documents to the DMV
Mail reinstatement fees and documents to the Division of Motor Vehicles, PO Box 17030, Charleston, WV 25317. Include a copy of your original suspension notice and your driver's license number. If you paid a ticket, it's up to you to send the DMV proof that it's been satisfied. [2][5]
-
Confirm your status before you drive
Check your license status online again before you drive. Driving while suspended or revoked brings mandatory jail time and another suspension or revocation. [3][8]
After a DUI revocation
-
Complete the Safety and Treatment Program
You must finish this program before your license can be reinstated, and it can't be waived. It includes 18 hours of DUI education, a substance abuse assessment, and any treatment the assessment calls for. Level I costs $400 at an approved provider, who sends your paperwork to the DMV (allow at least 20 business days). [9][10]

Complete the interlock program, if your offense requires it
Certain DUI offenses require the Alcohol & Drug Test and Lock (interlock) Program before full privileges come back. For a first offense with a BAC under .15, the minimum is 15 days of revocation and 125 days with the device; at .15 or higher, it is 45 days and 270 days. [10]

Apply early to drive with an interlock instead
If you apply and are approved for the interlock program before your revocation date, you can avoid the revocation, but its length is added to your device period. You can't have other revocations or be appealing this one, and you must have completed or be enrolled in the Safety and Treatment Program within 60 days of starting the interlock program. [10]
