Getting a suspended Ohio license back means serving the suspension, meeting every requirement on your record, and paying every reinstatement fee. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) handles reinstatement, and its online services show your reinstatement requirements and fees. [1][2]

Step by step

  1. Check what you need to reinstate

Look up your record with the BMV's online Reinstatement Requirements and Fees service. It shows what you still need to do and what you owe. [2]

  2. Serve the suspension

A second no-insurance offense within one year brings a one-year suspension, and a third brings two years. A 12-point suspension lasts six months. A court may grant limited driving privileges during a suspension it imposed, for needs like work, school, or medical care, and it can add conditions. [1][3][4]

  3. Have your insurer file an SR-22, if required

A no-insurance (non-compliance) suspension, a 12-point suspension, or a crash judgment suspension calls for an SR-22 or a financial responsibility bond on file with the BMV. For no-insurance and 12-point suspensions on or after April 9, 2025, you keep it for 1 year from the date the BMV imposes the suspension. Older cases carry 3 or 5 years. [1][3][5]

  4. Finish any required course and exam

After a 12-point suspension, you must complete a remedial driving course and retake the complete driver license exam. [3]

  5. Pay every reinstatement fee

A no-insurance suspension costs $40 for a first offense, $300 for a second, and $600 for a third within one year. Pay online by credit card, by mail with a check or money order to Ohio BMV, Attn REFEE, P.O. Box 16520, Columbus, OH 43216 (7 to 10 days to process), or at a deputy registrar for an extra $10 fee. 6. Ask about a payment plan or amnesty, if you can't pay

If you owe at least $150 and have met every other requirement, including current proof of insurance, you can pay at least $25 every 30 days. The BMV's amnesty program can reduce some fees, and drivers on SNAP, Medicaid, Ohio Works First, SSI, or a VA pension can qualify for a full waiver. Eligible drivers get a notice. [8]

After an OVI arrest or conviction

  1. Appeal the ALS or ask for limited privileges in time

You can appeal an administrative license suspension (ALS) at your first court appearance or within 30 days after it. A request to the court for limited driving privileges is due no later than 30 days after your first appearance. [9]

  2. Keep insurance through the suspension

For a first OVI, an ALS, or a physical-control suspension, the BMV asks for proof of insurance that covers the whole suspension. If a court grants limited privileges, it can require an immobilizing or disabling device on your vehicle or restricted plates. [4][10]

  3. Pay the OVI or ALS fee

The reinstatement fee is $315 for an ALS added to your record, or an OVI or physical-control conviction, on or after April 9, 2025. [7]
