How to get your license reinstated in Mississippi
Checked against official Mississippi sources · Last reviewed October 6, 2026
Getting a suspended Mississippi license back means serving the suspension, meeting every requirement on your record, and paying the reinstatement fee. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) Driver Service Bureau handles reinstatement. After some suspensions, such as a DUI, you also need proof of insurance filed by your insurer. [1][2]

Step by step
-
Find out why your license is suspended
Contact the court where your citations were issued, or the DPS Driver Service Bureau at 601-487-7028. DPS mails notices only to the address on file, and state law requires you to update your address within 30 days. [1][3]
-
Clear what caused the suspension
Common reasons include a DUI, failing to appear or pay for a citation, an unpaid civil judgment, and not following a child support order. If you owe a judgment from a crash, your license stays suspended until the judgment is stayed or satisfied and you give proof of financial responsibility. [3][4]
-
Have your insurer file a certificate of insurance, if required
Mississippi law requires an insurer's certificate of insurance filed with DPS in some cases, such as reinstating after a DUI suspension. You must keep this proof for at least 3 years; it can be released after that only if the state has no record of a conviction in those 3 years that would allow a suspension. If it stops meeting the requirement, DPS must suspend your license until you file new proof. [2][5][6]
-
Pay the reinstatement fee
The fee is $100 for most suspensions, including citation, failure to appear, failure to pay, and judgment suspensions. It is $175 for DUI and drug suspensions and $25 for child support. Pay online by credit or debit card, or mail a certified cashier's check or money order (no personal checks) to Driver Records Division/Reinstatement, P.O. Box 1459, Canton, MS 39046. [1][7]
-
Confirm your status before you drive
DPS says paying reinstatement fees doesn't necessarily mean your license is valid, and it doesn't cover pending or future citations. Call 601-487-7028 to check. If your license has expired, you may also need to renew it. [1][7]
After a DUI arrest or conviction
-
Contact the court within 30 days of your arrest
The receipt the officer gives you for your license works as a temporary permit for only 30 days. If you don't get a court order extending it within 30 days, your license is suspended for 90 days. Refusing a breath, blood, or urine test brings a 90-day suspension, or 1 year if you have a prior DUI. [3][8]
-
Know your suspension
A DUI suspension starts 21 days after the court order. It lasts 120 days for a first offense and 1 year for a second within 5 years. DPS says hardship licenses aren't available for DUI. [3]
-
Ask the court about an interlock-restricted license
A court can order an ignition-interlock-restricted license instead of a suspension. After the device is installed, you take the vehicle to DPS to verify it. The interlock fee is $175 and the restricted license is $56. [3][8]
-
Finish MASEP, show insurance, and pay $175
To reinstate after a DUI, you must complete the Mississippi Alcohol Safety Education Program (MASEP), show proof of current insurance at a Driver Service Bureau location, and pay the $175 reinstatement fee. Keep the insurance certificate for at least 3 years after it is issued. [2][3][8]
