SR-22 in Arizona
Checked against official Arizona sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026
Arizona requires "Future Financial Responsibility" proof, commonly called an SR-22, after a DUI court-conviction suspension or other alcohol- or drug-related revocation, a test-refusal suspension, insurance violations, or an unpaid judgment. Your insurer files it electronically with ADOT's Motor Vehicle Division (MVD).
In most cases you keep it for 3 years, counted from the end of your suspension or revocation, not from the date of the offense. [1]

3 years. For insurance violations it runs from the date you become eligible for reinstatement. Judgment cases run for the life of the judgment plus 2 years after it is paid. [1]

What does reinstatement cost?
$10 to reinstate after a suspension and $20 after a revocation. Admin per se/implied consent suspensions add $50, and revocations also require a license application fee of $10-$25 depending on age. [2]

Common questions
When does the 3 years start?
For a DUI, alcohol or drug revocation, or test refusal, it starts on the date your revocation or suspension ends. For insurance violations, it starts on the date you become eligible for reinstatement. When your time is up, MVD removes the requirement automatically, and you can check your status at AZMVDNow.gov. [1]
Are there cases where it lasts longer than 3 years?
Yes. After an unpaid judgment, you need it for as long as the judgment lasts plus 2 full years after it's paid. If you have a special ignition interlock restricted driver license (SIIRDL), you need it for as long as you hold that license. [1]
How much does it cost to get my license back?
Reinstatement is $10 after a suspension and $20 after a revocation. An admin per se or implied consent suspension adds $50. After a revocation you also pay a license application fee of $10 to $25, depending on your age, and MVD doesn't accept personal checks for reinstatements. [2][4][5]
I don't own a car. What do I need?
ADOT says that if you don't own a vehicle, you'll need a non-owner insurance policy. [1]
Can I file something other than an SR-22?
Yes. Instead of an insurance filing, you can deposit $40,000 with the Arizona State Treasurer's Office and get a certificate of deposit. [1]
What happens if my SR-22 lapses?
Your insurer must notify MVD at least 10 days before the coverage ends. If it lapses at any point during your required period, your license may be suspended until you file proof again, and you pay a $10 suspension fee. [1][6]
