In Rhode Island, the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Adjudication Office handles license reinstatement, case by case. The Rhode Island DMV says it no longer requires an SR-22, but you may have fines to pay before the DMV can reinstate you. [1][2]

Step by step
-
Find out why you are suspended
Check your record through the DMV's Online Customer Account. If a court suspended you, that court is listed on the bottom left of your suspension order, and court issues go to that court. [3][4]
-
Clear a court suspension online, if it qualifies
A suspension for failing to appear in court or failing to pay court fines (code 04 on your Notice of Action) can be reinstated online. Allow at least 24 hours after the court records your compliance, then 15 minutes after you pay for the reinstatement to take effect. [5]
-
Book a visit with the Adjudication Office for other suspensions
Other suspensions are handled at the Adjudication Office, 3rd floor, 600 New London Ave, Cranston. You need a reservation, because there is no walk-in service. A hearing officer reviews your case, and you may have fines to pay first. [2][3][4]
-
Know that no SR-22 is needed
The Rhode Island DMV says the SR-22 is no longer required, so you should not need your insurer to file one to reinstate. [1]
-
Pay the reinstatement fee
The DMV charges $153.50 to reinstate a license, or $353.50 after a DUI or refusal suspension. These amounts include a $3.50 technology surcharge. You can pay by cash, money order, personal or bank check payable to Division of Motor Vehicles, or credit card, which adds a third-party fee of at least $1.55. [6][7]
-
Get your license at a DMV branch
After reinstatement, take your reinstatement notice, one identity document, and proof of residency to a DMV branch to get your license. [2]
After a DUI or chemical test refusal
-
Complete every court-ordered sanction
Besides serving the suspension, you must do whatever the court orders. Common sanctions are a hardship license with an ignition interlock or blood or urine testing, an interlock alone, and alcohol treatment, alcohol education, or community service. [8]
-
Ask the court about a hardship license
A judge or magistrate can grant a hardship license for work, medical appointments, job training, school, or religious purposes. It requires an ignition interlock, blood and urine testing, or both, and in alcohol cases the court can make you wait up to 90 days first. [9]
-
Register for programs through the DMV
The DMV's Driver Retraining Office handles court-ordered alcohol education, treatment, and community service. Alcohol education costs $405 and is held at CCRI, but you register by paying at the DMV, not at CCRI. You can reinstate before finishing community service, which is due within 120 days of your conviction. [7][10]
-
Expect higher fees and extra review
The DUI or refusal reinstatement fee is $353.50, and the DMV lists a $100 ignition interlock device fee. If you have three or more alcohol or drug driving convictions, you must meet Medical Advisory Board requirements before reinstatement. [7][8]
