How to get your license reinstated in North Dakota

Checked against official North Dakota sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026

Getting a suspended North Dakota license back means serving all of your suspension time and meeting every reinstatement requirement on your record. The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) Driver License Division handles reinstatement, and its online system shows what you still owe. [1][2]

Step by step

  1. Check what you need to reinstate

Look up your record in NDDOT's online reinstatement system. It shows your outstanding requirements and lets you check and pay your reinstatement fee. It does not show requirements from other states. [1][2][3]

  2. Serve the full suspension or revocation

You can be reinstated only after all requirements are met and the required time has been served. If your license was revoked, not just suspended, you must also pass the written and road tests again. [1]

  3. Have your insurer file an SR-22, if required

A DUI or actual physical control conviction, driving under a suspension of 91 days or more or under revocation, driving without insurance, and an unpaid crash judgment can all require an SR-22 from your insurer. NDDOT says you usually keep it for one year, and the start date depends on the reason. SR-22 forms can be emailed to drs@nd.gov or faxed to 701-328-2435. [3][4][5]

  4. Pay your reinstatement fee

The fee is $25 for medical, vision, and testing suspensions, $50 for most other suspensions, and $100 for DUI, actual physical control, and implied-consent suspensions. Pay the full amount online by credit or debit card (it posts right away), by phone, or by check or money order mailed to the Driver License Division, 608 E. Boulevard Ave, Bismarck, ND 58505-0750. A local Driver License office takes the fee only if it is your last remaining requirement. [1][2][3][6]

  5. Send any documents NDDOT asks for

If your requirements include documents, NDDOT says emailed or faxed documents are usually processed within 1 to 3 business days. [3]

  6. Ask about a temporary restricted license

A temporary restricted license (TRL, or work permit) lets you drive a non-commercial vehicle for work, school, or essential needs. You must be 18 or older and a North Dakota resident, and you must first serve part of the suspension with no driving at all. Apply with form SFN 2254 by email to dottrl@nd.gov; there is no separate TRL fee, but reinstatement requirements still apply. [1][3]

  7. Confirm your status before you drive

Check your status online again before driving. If it isn't what you expect, you may still have other requirements or suspension time left. [3]

After a DUI or actual physical control arrest

  1. Request a hearing within 10 days, if you want one

After a failed or refused test, if your license is valid, the officer gives you a temporary operator's permit that lets you keep driving for 25 days. To challenge the suspension or revocation, request an administrative hearing within 10 days after the permit was issued. You can ask in writing or online. [1][7]

  2. Get an addiction evaluation after a conviction

After a DUI conviction, your license stays suspended until a licensed addiction treatment program tells NDDOT that you need no education or treatment, or that you attended the program it prescribed and followed its rules. [8]

  3. Consider the 24/7 Sobriety Program for a restricted license

If you join the 24/7 Sobriety Program, NDDOT may issue a temporary restricted license that takes effect after 14 days of the suspension, as long as you have no unrelated suspension. After a second or later DUI, a restricted license is only issued on the condition that you take part in 24/7. You apply with proof of financial responsibility and proof that you're in the program. [1][7][8]

  4. Expect the $100 fee and an SR-22

DUI, actual physical control, and implied-consent suspensions carry a $100 reinstatement fee. A DUI or actual physical control conviction also requires an SR-22, which NDDOT says you keep for one year from reinstatement or from when a temporary restricted license is issued. [3][4][6]
