The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), part of the Secretary of State, handles license suspensions and reinstatement. Before your license can be reinstated, you must pay all reinstatement fees, fines, and court fees. [1][2]

Step by step

  1. Find out what you still owe

Call BMV Driver License Services at 207-624-9000, or write to them with your name, date of birth, and current address. The BMV's online reinstatement fee service also shows your total fee before you pay. [2][3]

  2. Pay court fines and fees to the court

All fines and court fees must be paid before your license can be reinstated. The BMV's online service takes only reinstatement fees, not court fines or fees. [2][3]

  3. Have your insurer file an SR-22, if required

Being found guilty of failing to show proof of insurance, an OUI with a prior OUI within 10 years, an unpaid crash judgment, and some crashes and other violations can require an SR-22. Your insurer files it with the state, and you keep it for at least 3 years after you're reinstated. For SR-22 questions, call the BMV at 207-624-9000, ext. 52108. [1][4][5]

  4. Pay the reinstatement fee

Maine's reinstatement fee is $50, and several suspensions can each carry one. Pay online with a card for a $5 processing fee, or pay with no extra fee at a BMV branch, by phone at 207-624-9000 ext. 52100, or by mail. Branch mobile units don't take reinstatement fees, and medical suspensions have no fee. [2][3][6]

  5. Wait for confirmation before you drive

A processed payment doesn't mean you're reinstated; the BMV still has to check that you met every requirement. It mails you a letter when you're reinstated, or you can call 207-624-9000 ext. 52100. Don't drive until the BMV confirms it, verbally or in writing. [3]

After an OUI arrest or conviction

  1. Request a hearing within 10 days, if you want one

You can ask for a hearing on an administrative OUI suspension within 10 days from the date the suspension takes effect. There are no hearings on a court-ordered suspension. [7]

  2. Know your suspension period

A first OUI brings a 150-day administrative suspension, a second 3 years, and a third 6 years. A first refusal brings 275 days. If the court suspension is different, you serve whichever is longer. [7]

  3. Complete DEEP if you're required to

For most administrative OUI suspensions, you may be required to complete the Driver Education Evaluation Program (DEEP). Call the BMV OUI section at 207-624-9000, ext. 52104, to find out what applies to you. [7]

  4. Consider an ignition interlock for early reinstatement

With a first OUI, you can be reinstated after 30 days of the 150-day suspension if you install an approved interlock for the rest of the term. You must file a petition with the Secretary of State, pay a $50 application fee, and get written approval before installing the device. [8]

  5. File an SR-22 after a repeat OUI

If you have an OUI with a prior OUI within 10 years, the BMV can't reinstate you until you give proof of financial responsibility. You then keep it for at least 3 years after reinstatement. [4]
