SR-22 in Georgia

Checked against official Georgia sources · Last reviewed October 5, 2026

Georgia requires an SR-22 after a DUI conviction, and a stricter SR-22A after a second or later conviction for driving without insurance. Your insurer files it with the Department of Driver Services (DDS), and you keep it for 3 years from the date of your conviction.

After a DUI, DDS's reinstatement rule calls for higher limits on the policy behind your SR-22 than Georgia's usual minimum. [1][2][4]

Common questions

How much coverage do I need after a DUI?

The usual minimum is $25,000 bodily injury per person, $50,000 per crash, and $25,000 property damage. DDS's DUI reinstatement rule sets 50/100/50 after a first DUI conviction and 100/300/100 after a second or later DUI. Confirm the limits that apply to your conviction with DDS. [1][4]

Does the 3 years start when I file?

No. DDS counts the 3 years from the date of your conviction, for both DUI and repeat no-insurance cases. [1][2]

What is an SR-22A?

It's the filing DDS requires after a second or later no-insurance conviction, whether or not you own a car. The policy must be paid in full, and a non-owner policy must be prepaid for each 6 months. You must also serve 90 days before you can reinstate, with no limited permit. [1][2]

Can I pay for my DUI SR-22 policy monthly?

Only after your first 6 months. DDS first needs an SR-22 marked "Paid in Full" covering six months. After that it accepts an SR-22 marked "premium financed," and that policy can't be cancelled for non-payment within 180 days of its start. [1]

How much does it cost to reinstate after a first DUI?

The fee is $200 by mail or online, or $210 in person. A first DUI (age 21 and over) is a 12-month suspension, but you can reinstate after 120 days with a DUI Risk Reduction Program certificate and the fee. [3][5]

What happens if my SR-22 policy is cancelled?

Your insurer notifies DDS. For an SR-22A, DDS says that results in cancellation of your driver's license. For a DUI SR-22, DDS must get the insurer's cancellation notice at least 30 days before it takes effect. [1][2]
